For many years it was said that Europeans knew our city because of Coca-Cola and the Atlanta Boy Choir. This was because for forty-five years these wonderful young boys under the direction of Fletcher Wolfe sang in practically every concert hall, cathedral and music festival in the world. They sang to audiences in England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Finland and Russia not to mention tours in Mexico, Alaska, Nova Scotia and British Columbia. Their visits abroad have included performances for many heads of state as well as five performances given at St Peters in Rome with Pope John Paul II officiating. They have appeared several times at the White House and were invited to sing at President Carter’s inauguration. One of their most important performances took place in the United States Capitol Rotunda with the President, Vice President, and both houses of Congress in attendance. For this event, they were honored to sing Charles Davidson’s tribute to the 15,000 Jewish children who perished at Teresienstadt. Assisting in this Holocaust Memorial Service was the late renowned Cantor Isaac Goodfriend and Nobel Prize Winner, Elie Wiesel. The Atlanta Boy Choir has appeared many times with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Conductors Robert Shaw and Yoel Levi and won a Grammy Award for the recording of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem. Atlantans and particularly thousands of boys who have gone through the choir’s ranks are most excited about the return of Mr. Wolfe, the choir’s founding director. He will lead the choir this year while an international search committee finds a world class conductor to continue the reputation which Mr. Wolfe established. The choir under Fletcher Wolfe’s direction is planning a European Concert tour this summer and will include places where Mr. Wolfe and the choir are well known. This tour will provide the boys with once in a lifetime opportunities to sing in major concert halls and cathedrals and experience another part of our world. We are pleased to have Dr. Lawrence Weaver, Morehouse University and University of Michigan graduate, return to the choir to help assist in rehearsal as well as International Prize Winning Pianist, Robert Henry, the choir’s accompanist. Dr. Henry has a DMA from the University of Maryland and made his debut in Carnegie Hall. He is heard frequently with outstanding instrumentalists all over the world.
